Alice was my best friend. Judging by the heads I see nodding, I’m guessing she was that to many of you as well.

Truth be told, Alice was my only friend. But that does not take away from the fact that she was my best friend. She was the best friend anyone could ask for. And even if she was your only friend, like she was mine, that was better than having a million friends.

The last time I went into rehab – that was fourteen months ago – she was the only person who came to visit me. I don’t blame my family for not wanting me around – not after everything that has happened. But even when you have no one to blame but yourself, it helps to have a friend stick by you.

When I heard what happened to Alice, I cried. She didn’t deserve that. She deserved to live. She deserved the best life could offer, because that is what she gave us.

I’m sorry for rambling. I just wanted to say that I will miss my best friend.

  1. Thank you all for stopping by and commenting! I’m loving the feedback from all of you. It’s fun to hear where the reader’s mind is at as we’re moving along with the story. 🙂

  2. Well, I could have clicked on and read the whole story, but this line tells me I better slow down end enjoy the emotional impact “When I heard what happened to Alice …” So, I shall wait. Great suspense, though, that line is huge.

  3. ‘sorry for rambling’ Sheesh. Shortest eulogies ever.

And I’m guessing that by the time the meaning of the title is revealed and we finally learn how she died (we are going to eventually learn what happened to Alice, aren’t we? Because I tell you right now that if that’s never revealed you I will go mad!) I will be so crazed with all these little hints that I’ll barely be able to read the final words.

Consider yourself warned, Chuck. I need an ending!
